In the rapidly evolving world of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), staying ahead requires constant innovation and adaptation. Enter Defense Innovation Unit’s Blue UAS Refresh Challenge—an initiative aimed at identifying the next generation of drone platforms, components, and capabilities that meet the stringent requirements of the Department of Defense (DoD).
In this blog post, we will explore what the Blue UAS Refresh Challenge entails, its significance, and why Doodle Labs is uniquely positioned as a leading, Blue-cleared datalink provider in this space.
What is the Blue UAS Refresh Challenge?
The Blue UAS Refresh Challenge is an initiative spearheaded by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and the National Security Innovation Network (NSIN). The goal is to identify and evaluate platforms, components, and capabilities that can enhance the DoD’s Unmanned Aerial Systems.
The challenge covers First Person View (FPV), Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 platforms, as well as individual components and software that comply with U.S. regulations such as the National Defense Authorization Acts (NDAA) and the American Security Drone Act.
Why is it Important?
The need for reliable, efficient, and advanced UAS platforms is more crucial than ever. The DoD faces a significant shortfall in UAS capabilities required for training and combat readiness. The Blue UAS Refresh Challenge aims to bridge this gap by accelerating the delivery of effective and compliant UAS solutions.
Key Benefits of Participation
Participating in the Blue UAS Refresh Challenge offers numerous benefits, including potential inclusion on the DIU Blue UAS List or Framework, follow-on opportunities such as Other Transaction Agreements (OTAs) and Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs), and a chance for companies to showcase their solutions to DoD end users.
How the Blue UAS Refresh Challenge Works
Submission Process
Over 200 companies submitted more than 350 products for consideration for the first phase of the Challenge. Entries include FPV and Group 1, 2 and 3 platforms, and individual components.
A team of subject matter experts narrowed the list during an initial down-select to finish September. The remaining finalists will now prepare for for a live demonstration event in November at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MGAGCC) in 29 Palms, California, in which a team of DoD end-users will test, fly and operate their equipment in the field.
On November 15th, winners of the Challenge will be announced.
Evaluation Criteria
Submissions are judged on several criteria, including standardization, interoperability, payload options, cybersecurity compliance, platform characteristics, and operational effectiveness. Successful entries undergo a rigorous verification process to ensure compliance with all relevant laws and cybersecurity standards.

The Impact of the Blue UAS Refresh Challenge
Advancing UAS Capabilities
By participating in the Blue UAS Refresh Challenge, companies contribute to advancing UAS capabilities that align with DoD operational needs. Winners are not guaranteed a spot on the Blue UAS Cleared List. But this initiative is a clear effort by DIU to accelerate the delivery of innovative solutions, ensuring that the DoD remains prepared for the modern battlefield.
Enhancing National Security
The Challenge also plays a critical role in enhancing national security by incorporating cutting-edge commercial technologies into defense applications. This collaboration fosters a robust innovation ecosystem that benefits both defense and commercial sectors.
Building a Stronger Community
The Blue UAS Refresh Challenge encourages collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including universities, research institutions, startups, and established companies. This collaborative approach drives innovation and helps develop technologies that directly support national security.
