Doodle Labs has now released several new Mesh Rider Radio models that operate in the C-bands (4.4 GHz to 5.9 GHz).

In this blog post, we highlight key features and characteristics of these bands and explain the use-cases that can benefit from the use of these radios.

Key Benefits of C-band radios

1. Fresnel Zone and Ground Operation Benefits

Higher frequencies in the C-bands result in a smaller Fresnel zone clearance from the ground.

Use cases that operate close to the ground can benefit, such as handheld tactical communication and unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) and above-water surface vehicles (UAS).

2. Increased RF Power and Longer Range

In most countries outside the United States, the regulatory limit for the 5.x GHz bands is 4W RF power, which is significantly higher than the 100mW limit for 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

This 40x higher power allows for longer range communication in line-of-sight (LOS) conditions, even when accounting for higher transmission loss.

3. Antenna Size and SWaP Benefits

Higher frequencies allow for smaller and lighter antenna sizes.

Use-cases with size, weight, and power (SWaP) limitations, such as UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and handheld tactical applications, can benefit from these characteristics.

4. More Channels for Interference-Free Performance

C-bands provide a greater number of channels compared to the limited channels in the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band.

Doodle Labs multi-band radios and Sense, our automatic interference-avoidance feature set, leverage these additional channels for optimal interference-free performance.

New C-band Mesh Rider Radio models

Radio Model RM-5600 (Global License-Free UNII Bands)

RM-5600 is available in both of the Wearable and OEM form-factors.

These new models operate in UNII 1-4 bands, enhancing Sense’s automatic channel selection.

This takes advantage of the newly expanded UNII-4 band in the USA (5850-5895 MHz) for lightly used 45 MHz spectrum.

Radio Model RM-5400 (USA Public Safety Band + License-Free ISM Bands)

RM-5400, also available in both the Wearable and OEM form-factors, is certified for the USA’s Public Safety band (4940-4990 MHz) and supports license-free ISM bands.

These models also offer flexibility for situations where the Public Safety band cannot be used outside the USA.

Radio Model RM-5200 (NATO C-band, Special Government Bands, ISM Bands)

RM-5200, available in Wearable and OEM form-factors, covers a wide range of frequency bands from 4400 to 5895 MHz. These models provides access to multiple frequency bands (4400-5895 MHz), offering a wide range of channel options.

The models can  be used globally in special bands and license-free bands, and is suitable for experimental use in the 5030-5091 MHz spectrum for UAVs under consideration.

Radio Model RM-5700 (Japan’s 5.7 GHz Robotics Band)

RM-5700 was developed specifically for Japan’s 5.7 GHz robotics band, is available in the OEM form-factor will soon be available in the Wearable.

These models are certified by MIC for commercial deployments in Japan.

Overall, our C-band Mesh Rider Radios offer a comprehensive solution for a variety of applications, capitalizing on the advantages of the C-bands’ characteristics and regulatory provisions
