The Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV), commonly known as robots go places where humans cannot. Predominantly these robots are used to replace humans in hazardous situations. Examples are natural disaster response in Earthquake struck buildings, ground surveillance, and to enhance police and military operations. UGVs are also being developed for detecting explosives and bomb disabling vehicles. Military, EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), HazMat (Hazardous Materials), SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics), law enforcement agencies and other first responders worldwide rely on remote controlled security robots to help assure a safe, successful outcome for their most challenging missions.
Wireless Command, Control and Communication (C3) – The Lifeline of Unmanned Ground Vehicles
The wireless communication link is a lifeline to carry command, control and payload data information between the Remote Control Station and the UGV. They typically require few hundred meter non-line of sight range. It is desirable to have highly reliable, low latency link for bi-directional command, control and status information. Additionally, penetration through the walls and other obstructions may be of paramount consideration. Low frequency helps with the long range and penetration issues. On the other hand, larger Fresnel zone works against very low frequency. Many of Doodle Labs customers have been able to achieve a good performance balance between the 900-2400 MHz frequency range. This frequency range provides reasonable NLOS operation.
A small SWaP (Space, Weight and Power) are the important factors for the handheld remote control stations. The UGV needs to stream HD video to the remote controller over high capacity downlink. Doodle Labs’ high performance and tiny Industrial Wi-Fi and Prism-WiFi family of embedded modules are successfully used by many UGV manufacturers for short to medium range applications. With Doodle Labs transceivers, in special defense applications, customers have achieved NLOS range of up to 300 meters (1000 feet) and stream HD quality surveillance video in NLOS conditions.
